Teaching Permit(Opetuslupa)

With an Opetuslupa (teaching permit), you can teach someone to drive a car or another vehicle in Finland. The permit is student-specific, meaning you can only teach the student whose name is on the permit.

Validity of the Teaching Permit

For a passenger car driving license (B category), the permit is valid for 3 years or until the student passes the driving test.

• For other vehicle categories, the permit is valid for 9 months or until the student passes the driving test.

Who Can Apply for a Teaching Permit?

You can apply for a teaching permit if you meet the following conditions:

• You are at least 25 years old.

• You have held a valid driving license for at least 5 years (issued in Finland or an EU/EEA country).

• You are not currently banned from driving.

• You have not been banned from driving in the past 5 years due to serious traffic violations (e.g., endangering traffic safety).

• You have not been banned from driving in the past year due to repeated traffic offenses, unauthorized driving, or other traffic-related crimes.

• You do not have a criminal or fine record that would make you unsuitable as an instructor.

Who Can You Teach?

• You can teach close relatives (parents, legal guardians, grandparents, siblings, children, and grandchildren) without restrictions.

• If the student is not a close relative, you can teach a maximum of 3 students within 3 years.

Important Notes:

• When teaching car driving, the instructor is responsible for any traffic violations made by the student.

• When teaching moped, moped car, or motorcycle driving, the student is responsible for their own traffic violations unless the instructor is in the vehicle.

• A teaching permit can replace part of the driving school lessons, but risk assessment training must still be completed at a driving school.
